Our Aims

Why an Eisteddfod ?

"Eisteddfod" is an old Welsh word literally meaning "a sitting", but used now  to describe gatherings of musicians, artists, poets, actors and crafts people to compete, compare and learn from each other.

Such gatherings occur in many countries - not the least being Australia, with over 40 registered Eisteddfods.  Some are very large, such as Ballarat and Sydney and offer rich prizes and great prestige.  Adelaide is one of the oldest and best known.

Most though thrive where they are most valuable  -  in country areas which otherwise miss out on opportunities for people of all ages to discover and nourish artistic talent and interest.

The illustrious careers of Sir Robert Helpmann from Mt Gambier, Keith Michell from Pt Pirie, June Bronhill from Broken Hill and numerous others, all began in local  competitions.

In the Fleurieu we are close to Adelaide in kilometers but far away in easily accessible opportunities.  So if local talent is to be revealed and encouraged, we must do it ourselves.  At the same time we welcome entries from all areas.

Hence we have the   STRATHALBYN EISTEDDFOD

The Eisteddfod will ....

provide participants with the opportunity to perform in public at their level of competence, and in an understanding environment.
have Sections for activities popular in the region.
have Sections for levels of attainment from beginners to advanced.
be encouraging in spirit.
be designed largely by and with the participation of teachers and professionals with local knowledge and experience.
be inexpensive for participants and audience.
be reviewed and adjusted to ensure it continues to serve the best interests of the region.
provide the option to perform competitively or non-competitively as desired.
